| .....The
Trips...
.....No
matter which direction you head you will see awesome cliffs,
caves and beautiful fishing villages. The coastline is open
and exposed, but
you will see that there are lots of little harbours tucked in naturally
sheltered nooks and crannies.
.....Heading
Eastward...
.....Eastward
brings us past the
beach at Banff Links with its stunning stretch of golden sand. Continuing
along the coast you will see the twin towns of Macduff
and Banff by the mouth of the River Deveron. Going on toward Gardenstown,
the tiny settlement of Crovie lies tucked in under the rocks on the
edge of the shore.
.....Just
beyond these scenic villages lie the towering cliffs of Troup
Head with its vast array of seabirds perched on the exposed
rock faces. Down below the cliff face are caves which extend below
the waterline some 15 metres deep. These caves are frequented by
the local seals which fish these waters along with the birds -
you may also see them sunning themselves on the rocks.
.....Beyond
Troup Head is the beautiful sheltered sandy beach of Cullykhan and
Fort Fiddes and then Pennan, the wee village with the red phone box
made
famous
by the film Local Hero.
.....Heading
Westward...
.....Westward
from the marina takes us past Portsoy, the home
of Portsoy Marble and made famous in recent years by the popularity
of the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival.
.....The
cliffs stretching from Portsoy to Cullen are very craggy and play
host to a vast variety of marine life and nesting birds seeking
a quiet spot. One of the highlights is the remains of Findlater
Castle clinging to the rocks on an exposed cliff face.
.....From Findlater
Castle we proceed towards Cullen with its grand railway viaducts,
then crossing the bay we come to the famous Bowfiddle Rock with
its huge archway. We promise to get as close as we can to the
looming archway.
.....We
are very careful when watching wildlife and adhere to the rules
on how
to watch marine mammals and birds. Remember, sometimes you
won’t get as far on your trip because we are lucky enough
to sight Dolphins!
